I was reading a book on Faith vs Materialism for the past few days. It wasn’t a very thick paperback honestly, but it was simple and it was straightforward. Indeed there were plenty of warnings about the possible loss of faith with the pursuit of material wealth, the true purpose of wealth, the disillusioning joy wealth purportedly can deliver and the imminent arrival of Dajjal as the world today revolves around riba, usury and the unfair distribution of wealth. It was enlightening to say the least. But, what really woke me up, was the point that faith is the continuous strive to be closer to God, Allah swt. While materialism is the pursuit of money and vanity which strives to make one firmly entrenched in this Dunia. So, materialism goes the opposite way of faith. While we should make the best of our borrowed time here, we should remember to spend more on doing good deeds and helping others, Instead of spending on ourselves all the time. So, To less shoes and handbags and to more money to be donated to the poor and destitute.
